Congress beginning in 2005 enacted the domestic production activities deduction, in an effort to spur domestic production and employment in the U.S.  This federal deduction is available to businesses engaged in manufacturing and production in the U.S.  Sometimes referred to as the manufacturers’ deduction, it is available for many other businesses in addition to manufacturers, including:

  • Real property construction
  • Engineering and architectural firms
  • Computer software development
  • Electricity and natural gas production
  • Potable water production
  • Food and beverage production
  • Film and video production
  • Sound recording production
